Don Zimlich Receives
2009 Top Hat Award
Don is a member of St. Matthew Cathedral parish and he has been involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society for over 10 years. Thinking of him brings words like gentle, compassionate, and committed to mind. Don is someone who is always willing to go above and beyond whatever is asked with never a complaint or a harsh word for anyone. When asked to do a food call, he will often do 2 or 3 calls, fitting them in between his other volunteer work.
Don often spends time with clients in prayer and conversation. On one occasion, a client was extremely lonely and wanted to talk. In their conversation the client mentioned that he was going to the Homeless Shelter every morning to do a Bible study with whoever would show up. Don was so touched by the commitment and positive attitude exhibited by this client , that he decided to go back just to visit with him on several occasions, thus developing a bond and friendship between them.
During the time of his involvement with the society, Don has held several positions within the St. Matthew parish conference, the longest as secretary. Whenever there is a need for volunteers to help at the District Office, he is the first to volunteer; always in his own quiet, gentle way. He always goes above and beyond what is asked of him.
